In chapter 3 we show that each of the two pri mary architectures of business, the volume-operations model that underlies consumer transactions and the complex-systems model that underlies enterprise commerce, has a distinctive approach to innovation that is contraindicated in the other architecture.
Comparably, the volume-operations model can be overtaxed with too much volume, as we often see when health-care or educa tion systems struggle to provide basic services.
And in so doing, they stand in direct contrast to the volume-operations model.
In the volume-operations model, vendors seek to acquire cus tomer bases of hundreds of thousands to millions of consumers, with scores of transactions per consumer per year, at an average price of a few dollars per transaction.
In the volume-operations model, the customer as an individual is not the scarce element in the system and hence is not its focal point.
